    OBITUARY

    NICHOLAS L. PERNIA
    Dec. 28, 1908 - Feb. 1, 2002

    ERIE - Funeral services have been set for Nicholas L. Pernia, 93, of Erie, who died at 2:05 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. He had been seriously ill for four days.

    Friends may call from 2 to 8 tonight and 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Allore Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday He will lie in state from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Erie. Rev. Joseph Plawecki, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Erie.

    Born Dec. 28 1908 in LaSalle, he was the son of William and Cora (Leonard) Pernia, He married Rita Murray Feb. 22, 1941 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He worked for 38 years as a stationary steam and refrigeraton engineer for Detroit Public Schools, retiring in 1968.

    He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Council 7413, Knights of Columbus, where he was named Grand Knight of the Year 1999. He also was a member of St. Joseph Parish Friendship Card Club and St. Anthony Parish Card Club.

    He also was an inventor who held patents on beverage container designs and for a leaf mulching attachment for riding mowers.

    Surviving are his wife; four sons, Bernard (Sharon) of Hamburg Township, Dwight (Michele) of Farmington Hills, Leslie (Megan) of Livonia, and Brian of Madison Heights; four daughters, Marlene Bettis of Boca Raton, Fla., Lori (Roger) Legris of Brighton and Julie (Paul) Cavanaugh of Madison Heights; 17 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur, Raymond, William and Donald, and four sisters, Pearl Segur, Gladys Wood, Ethel Freet and Thalia Timmons.

    Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or School or Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe.
